Getting into lightweight backpacking can be an intimidating road. With so much different gear on the market and so many new things to learn, coupled with the wealth of differing opinions online, it’s tough to know where to start. Over the years, we’ve digested a lot of information, both in the field and online, and come up with what we see as the best middle ground kit available on the market. It’s entirely up to you to leave out a lot of items for a featherweight, minimalist kit, or add a lot for a plush (but heavy) car camping simulation, but here we present you with the balanced load, a ten pound base weight with all the amenities needed for a good extended stay in the wilderness.
Base weight is essentially all your gear, minus consumables, worn clothing and fuel. What you see in front of you is a versatile lineup, useful for a backyard overnight or a month long trek through the Alaskan bush, and the list can be easily tweaked to accommodate for specific conditions. Each item is usually interchangeable with several other cutting edge items on the market, so don’t hesitate to ask about the options, and then get out there and test it for yourself!
It is incredible the possibilities that open up once you reduce the weight on your back, and we are here to help you get there!

Excellent – thank you for putting this list together.

Under clothing, you don’t have any shirts, hiking pants, socks, hat, gloves or underwear listed. I’m sure this must have been an oversight as no backpacker would/should go into the backcountry without those most basic items.
