Trekking Poles

Trekking poles are appearing in the hands of experienced backpackers more and more frequently these days. They provide added stability in sketchy terrain and tend to reduce stress on joints over the long haul. Many lightweight backpackers also use trekking poles as an integrated part of their shelter system, eliminating the need to carry dedicated poles for pitching tarps in areas devoid of suitable trees. When selecting trekking poles, consider the tradeoffs between weight, durability and adjustability. The lightest poles are constructed of single carbon-fiber shafts and weigh mere ounces. The more conventional lightweight poles are adjustable and typically weigh in at around a pound a pair. These poles are also more durable and their variable length allows you to collapse them down for travel or extend them for flexibility when pitching a tarp or traveling through changing terrain.
