Water storage used to be a pretty simple notion. For years, hard-sided Nalgene bottles were pretty much the only game in town – and they were a vast improvement over the previous generation’s metal canteens, but things have changed. Lightweight backpackers are now carrying everything from used soda bottles to integrated hydration packs. At ProLite GEAR, we’ve come to the conclusion that the older hard-sided bottles are pretty much obsolete. If you need a bottle type container, try a one litre Aqua Fina bottle for under a buck and a half – water included. We tend to use one of these in conjunction with soft-sided water bottles made by Nalgene or Platypus. These soft-sided water bottles are light, extremely durable, and take up almost no room when they’re empty. If your pack is compatible with a hydration pack, this is also an outstanding way to carry your water.
