There is now a broad range of packs available for lightweight backpackers. Read our Backpack Buying Guide, and articles on Ultralight Backpacks, Backpack Types, Backpack Anatomy And Features, and Backpack Sizing for additional information on backpacks.
When considering which pack will best suit your needs, you should first determine roughly how much weight you intend to carry and how much volume your average backcountry load represents. If you have already completed the transition to lightweight backpacking and typically carry loads under twenty-five pounds, then you can safely consider one of the ultralight offerings that achieve significant weight savings at the expense of packframe structure. If, on the other hand, you typically carry loads of twenty-five pounds and higher, or are in the process of transitioning into the world of lightweight backpacking, then one of the packs in the sub two-pound range, that still have a substantial packframe and waist-belt will be a better choice. As always, if you have any questions about which piece of gear would best suit your needs please just give us a call.
