When Christmas came to Bozeman, it brought us an amazing present - 100 inches of snow to our local range, the Bridger Mountains. Backcountry skiers know the Bridgers to be one of the finest playgrounds for skiing and riding in the lower 48. And play we did:
In our quest to merchandise only the finest avalanche gear on the market, we had the opportunity to join the Backpacking Light backcountry gear testing crew for a day in the Bridgers to evaluate a dizzying array of avalanche beacons (transceivers), probes, poles, skis, bindings, and shovels. Having the opportunity to test all of this gear side by side was an enlightening experience, to say the least, and isn't something you can normally appreciate as a buyer at an outdoor show or when browsing catalogs.
Our favorite product was the Pieps DSP Avalanche Beacon.
The Pieps DSP Avalanche Beacon earned high ratings from all of the testers because of its ease of use, light weight, and ability to locate victims quickly. In our multiple burial scenarios, teams using the Pieps DSP found three victims buried at random locations in one-third of the time as teams using the next fastest transceiver.
We are very excited to have the Pieps DSP Avalanche Beacon in our 2004 winter backcountry product line.
