I've owed this torch since it first came out, Mammut told me from the begining that it took lithiums. Just received email from Mr. Hong at Mammut Customer Service that the xzoom, xshot, xlite, and xflex all take lithiums as I consider another Mammut light.
X-Zoom outstanding at night navigation and winter use, great battery life, and very consistant with lithium batteries.

I have to agree with the above review. Having the option for lithium batteries would be great with this light especially since I ice climb in at night alot. I love the features and the beam of light that it throws but battery time does suffer in the cold.

I've been using this lamp for a couple years now and not a problem thus far. My only main complaint is the lack of circuit regulation, thus no option for lithium batteries (at least according to the manufacturer ;). It would also be nice to have a belt version for those cold, cold days. The pluses are:
1. Ease of operation with gloves
2. Great flood to zoom graduated adjustment with a simple twist of the lamp housing
3. Super bright and long lasting with just 3 AAs
If alpine starts and route - finding are on your agenda, I would recommend this headlamp.

The Mammut X-Zoom is the perfect marriage between Super bright and light weight. It completely blows away the competition. The adjustable light beam is so easy to adjust with a gloved hand. The lowest widest setting is fantastic for reading. The brightest tightest setting is great for burning your partners eyes out, or seeing something with absolute clarity 400 ft away. The back of the battery pack can be setup to flash 3 bright red leds. With out a top strap the headlamp is most at home on a helmet. I have found it is pretty comfortable on your bare head as well.

I had a chance to see one in action the other night on a hike and bike ride in very dark conditions. While my petzl myo xp was getting the job done, Carl's mammut x-zoom was lighting up the country-side for a very comfortable distance ahead. It seems like a great lamp for its intended purpose.

I have this headlamp, and was on the aforementioned bike ride. It serves very nicely in this role, as well as many others, and has spoiled me further yet than the TX-1 I have. The beam easily adjusts from very wide flood to piercing spot, and all power levels are availible throughout the angular range, making it the most flexible of the super-lamps I've seen. I have used it on a bare head, and with hats, and have not found it uncomfortable.
Great headlamp, bar none.
