Mammut Lucido TX1

I think this headlamp is great, I'm on my second one(the first turned out to be a tiny bit of a lemon, just one occasional smack of a hand though and it worked). To the headlamps credit I did use the hell out of it before it started to malfunction. The model I currently have is an updated version with stepped rotation in the beam so now it stays where it's put yet it's very easy to adjust. Additionally the bulb seems to be significantly brighter and not even joking here, my friends really do call it, ''the sun''. The evening I got the new lamp we went out at 1a.m. and sent a 120m multi pitch trad route under new moon darkness and the light performed exceptionally. The capability to rotate the lens inward is huge, both in preventing scratches and dirt/scum buildup. Personally I don't find an issue with weight; I think the weight is greatly outweighed by performance. It's also a nicely balanced weight as opposed to some of the older(and unfortunately some newer) clunkers you find on other climbers heads. Bottom Line A+

Excellent review, as far as the minor fit issues. This head light was meant o be worn on a climbing helmet so padding on the battery pack isn't much or at all. There is a kit you can buy so you can put the battery pack in your pocket or in your pack and still wear the headlamp like normal. One feature that I liked was the optional red strobe on the back of the battery pack. You can see your partner even if his light is aimed at trees where you can't see a direct beam. Carl you are right this is not a head lamp. Mammut has found a way to harness the sun and put it on your head.

Nice review. I can attest to the power:weight ratio of these lamps. I personally had a minor fit issue, otherwise I'd there would be one in my pack.

This is not a light headlamp. Mine weights 5.8 oz with batteries. If you find yourself doing much off trail navigation by headlamp, however, it can save your bacon by illuminating distant landmarks effectively. It easily recognizably shows terrain features to 100+ yards (sometimes 200, conditions depending), and will effectively illuminate animals eyes at 400+ (fun, but mostly a novelty). After several instances in marginally familiar territory with more traditional headlamps where I sorely wished for more light, I have been very glad to carry the weight since if I knew that situation was potentially on the menu. Despite the amazing night-penetrating beam, it doesn't seem to chew through batteries much faster than more conventional headlamps I own. If you only carry a headlamp to setup camp, cook, read, and follow a established trail, the Lucido tx1 is overkill considering the price and weight. If you've found yourself potentially cliffed-out at dusk, due to an inability to tell just which part of the mountain you're on, consider the tx1 or one of its super-beam brethren. Carl
