Made entirely from 1.1oz silicone impregnated parachute ripstop nylon, this is a poncho-style cape which provides wind and rain protection while hiking or standing in one place. Adjustable shock cord in back allows the hem to be drawn inwards to cut down on flapping and to secure around a small backpack.

"I had the opportunity to field test the Silcoat Cape over the Labor Day (2005) long weekend. On the approach to a scramble up "The Tower" in Kananaskis Country we got hit with a brief rain/snow squall that was heavy enough to warrant rain protection. I hauled out my Silcoat Cape and put it on over my Granite GearVapor Trail pack with a 70cm ice axe strapped onto the side. The Cape did not have enough fabric to completely cover the axe and pack but did slide down between the pack and the axe to cover the top of the pack and some of each side. I was able to tie the shock cord around my waist and keep everything tight and in place. The trail was narrow, rooted and slippery and necessitated the use of hiking poles. The Silcoat Cape, even tightened with the shock cord allowed plenty of freedom for my hands to use the poles for balance and propulsion. I thought it provided good coverage for the pack and myself considering that I had the ice axe strapped to the pack. Without the ice axe, the Cape completely covers the pack and fully protects it as well as me from the elements. I like this product, I like the weight (5oz / 140g). I like the ease of putting it on over a pack in a rainstorm. I also liked the breathability provided by a relatively loose fit.
